Words in Deep Blue – Cath Crowley

For a book about books I expected this to be quite something, and I expected I would love it. Oh how wrong I was.

Let’s start with the two most annoying people ever, Henry and Rachel! Seriously I will award them the trophy of most annoying MC’s, Henry is so annoying I just wanteed to get inside the book and shake him untill he got some sense, I don’t know how someone can have emphaty for him.

Rachel might have suffered a great loss but the way her character was written was done in a very bad way, she was just hollow, not only I couldn’ feel her grief but I couldn’t feel anything from her.

What frustrates me the most about this book is how shallow it is. It’s a story about this incredible library, a place where people leave letters in between pages of books (in a specific section of the store) and notes on the margins and just generally have conversations “inside” the pages of these stories and it was all just… Flat. I wanted to feel connected to it, emotional even. It’s about the power of stories and books and it made me feel nothing.

The writing was also very simplistic, so many short un-descriptive senteces. The author also uses too much dialogue that actually doesn’t say anything or lacks emotion, it’s like she justs makes the characters converse about uninportant things and it was just boring. I was still bored when I reached 35% of this book but I pushed through (cause I push even the books I don’t like since I hate leaving unfinished things) and yeah no redemption for this one here.

There are so many things the author could’ve explored, so many layers involving different characters or plot lines, I mean for a book with so MANY characters she could’ve done a better job on tying and developing all of the stories. This book has mere 273 pages and if done right it could be much bigger, or if done right these pages would be enough.

It’s so frustrating to have hopes and expectations about a book, especially one you wait a long time, even years to read and then it comes around and it’s disappointing. This book didn’t work for me, but maybe it will work for you, you can purchase this book via my affiliate link and I’ll receive a small comission, click here for the english edition and here for the portuguese edition.
