I have been a fan ot this story since I was a child (yes I had a very strange mother who cultivated in me an early habit of loving strange things like the cartoon based on this story, scooby-doo, the nightmare before christmas and stuff like that).
I had never read the original tale until now, and what a delight! I am at a loss for words because honestly this was a masterpiece. The writing is sublime. The descriptions are so vivid, abotu the scenery, the smells, the food, that this story gives the utmost feeling of autumn. I loved every second of it.]
This sequestred glen has long been known by the name of SLEEPY HOLLOW, and its rustic lads are called the Sleepy Hollow Boys throughout all the neighboring country. A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the çand, and to pervade the very atmosphere. (…) Certain it is, the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie. They are given to all kinds of marvellous beliefs, are subject to trances and visions, and frequently see strange sights, and hear music and voices in the air.
I was mesmerized by the writing and the power the author had in controling the atmosphere so well. It was a short story in length yes, but in truth this story holds immense power. I think I will come back to it from time to time, just to savour this, and be marvelled with the geniality of it. Definitely a favorite.
